The UU Congregation of Gwinnett jumped into action this year -- from helping Doctors Without Borders in Haiti to new Wednesdays With Friends activities and a skill building workshop on compassionate communications. And there is plenty more action planned for the rest of the year!
While we didn't establish any New Year's resolutions as a congregation, I'm happy to share that we are starting the year with enthusiasm and early accomplishments. Here are just a few:
1. Overwhelming response to Haiti after the earthquake:
Our congregation raised over $2,700 to support the work of Doctors Without Borders in Haiti. In addition, supplies were furnished in support of our own member, Nathalie Bigord, who went to her mother-land to provide aid to those in distress. We look forward to learning from Nathalie's experience as an emergency responder.
2. Compassionate Communication workshop:
Over 30 of us came together on January 23rd for a facilitated workshop that taught us the principles of nonviolent communication as described by Marshall Rosenberg. We learned how to make observations without judgments (it's not as easy as it sounds); how to share feelings (they are one-person words); how to understand what you need; and how to make a request. There was great learning about obstacles to connection that got us all thinking about how we listen and how we speak. Look for some follow-up sessions in the coming weeks. Special thanks to the Transition Team for bringing this to UUCG!
3. Wednesdays With Friends:
Wednesdays With Friends (WWF) are back! It has a full calendar -- check it out on the website. Come on by for dinner or just for the program each Wednesday at UUCG.
4. UUCG hires a Church Administrator:
February 1st marked the beginning of a new era in UUCG's organizational development. We hired Laura de Castro as our Church Administrator. In this part-time position, Laura will provide the coordination and organization we need to maximize the work of our volunteers and minister. You can reach her at

5. Membership on the Grow:
Our UU 101 class held on January 17th was attended by 6 visitors. The UU 102 class is scheduled for February 7th. Think back to your first visits to UUCG and remember to extend hearty greetings to guests and visitors. Our next New Member Sunday will be on February 28th -- join us!
The items above are just a few of many great happenings here at UUCG. We will continue to enjoyed Sunday Services that are rich and varied throughout the year. The Social Justice committee has several initiatives underway. The High School Youth Group is invigorated with more activities and opportunities for the youth to get together.
How do you want to be involved with UUCG in 2010? There are many opportunities -- find your passion or try something new. And bring a friend! |
