We will learn to:

  • learn risk factors and warning signs for mental health and addiction concerns,
  • learn strategies for how to help someone in both crisis and non-crisis situations, and
  • where to turn for professional help.

We will learn how to use the ALGEE abbreviation for a process that helps folks decide their next steps:

  •  (A)ssess for risk of suicide or harm
  •  (L)isten nonjudgmentally,
  • (G)ive reassurance and information,
  • (E)ncourage appropriate professional help, and
  • (E)ncourage self-help and other support strategies.

We will cover these types of problems:

  • Depression and mood disorders,
  • anxiety disorders,
  • trauma,
  • psychosis, and
  • substance use disorders.

We will address these specific events:

  •  Panic attacks,
  • suicidal thoughts or behaviors,
  • nonsuicidal self-injury,
  • acute psychosis (e.g., hallucinations or delusions),
  • overdose or withdrawal from alcohol or drug use, and
  • reaction to a traumatic event.
