The Angel of Mercy and the Angel on the Battlefield: Healthcare Reformers and the Civil War

Currently UU103 is exploring the growth of social justice recognition and the move towards progressivism through the work of Dorothea Dix in February, Jane Addams in April, and then 20th Century Nobel Peace Prize winners with connections to Unitarian Universalism.

In this session, we will talk about Healthcare reformers during the Civil War.

Dorothea Dix was raised Unitarian and joined with Quakers to learn how to speak out and improve prisons and healthcare for the mentally ill.  During the Civil War, she became the head of nursing for the Union Army.  Clara Barton was raised as a Universalist and, during the Civil War, collected supplies and nursed soldiers in the train stations and on the battlefields.  Both became outspoken organizers of mental and physical healthcare reform in the US, along with other Unitarians and Universalists.

Denise Benshoof offers UU 103 classes are offered on the fourth Sunday of every other month.  They go in depth into historical events and people, and how they relate to Unitarian Universalism.  These sessions are developed and presented by Denise Benshoof, and sponsored by the membership Committee.
