UU103: The Unitarian Darwins and the Definition of Faith

Charles and Emma Darwin, English Unitarians, struggled with a common cultural question today, whether there was a single God or any god at all.  Emma believed; Charles didn’t.  And, yet, they chose to have a loving relationship.

Darwin’s voyage to South America and the Galapagos Islands ended the same year Ralph Waldo Emerson published his essay on Transcendentalist thought, Nature.  Darwin’s scientific studies, and continuing scientific research by scientists and writers during the 19th Century, challenged theological beliefs, and continue to do so to this day.

 

Come for a class in UU history as we explore “a free and responsible search for truth and meaning.”  Feel free to bring your own lunch.  Light snacks will be provided.
