As written by Maryjane Stout:

Orienteering, anyone?
Some SAGE members have expressed an interest in learning more about this activity. Teens and those who have been doing it for years run through the woods with a map and a compass, searching for “points” like in a treasure hunt, racing to get to the finish line.
Not me. I WALK through the woods with a map (no compass needed). The points on an elementary course (2-3 k, or about 1.5 miles) are always adjacent to a foot path. It’s a lovely way to perhaps encounter a deer or a turkey on a pretty fall day. It’s more about STROLLING and chatting and being in nature than racing. But fun to watch the youngsters, too.

Who wants to join me? We’ve set two dates, weather permitting: Sept. 22 and Nov. 10. Sept. 22 meet is at Fort Yargo SP in Winder. Nov. 10 is at Hard Labor Creek State Park in Rutledge.

We woud leave UUCG about 9 am, bring a sack lunch, return about 2 or 3. Free map reading tutorial at the meet. $10 per person + $3 per team. Groups of 2 or 3 are better for first-timers and more fun.

Depending on date selected, parking may be $5/car.

Please RSVP me to coordinate specifics.  It is preferable to set up carpools without needing to meet at the church since I live closer to Winder than to the church.
